What is the ZipVitals Score?
The ZipVitals Score is a single 0–100 measure of a ZIP code's health conditions, computed from twenty public datasets across nine scoring domains: chronic disease, social need, environmental hazard, preventive care, risk behavior, mental health, disability, climate and disaster risk, and healthcare access. Higher is healthier. It describes documented conditions in a place — it is not a verdict on the people who live there.
How is the ZipVitals Score calculated?
Every metric is standardized against the national distribution of ZIP codes, capped so no single outlier dominates, combined into nine domain sub-scores, weighted by a published weight table, and rescaled to 0–100. A strong domain can offset a weak one. The full recipe, including the exact weights, is published in full.
Does a low Score mean it's a bad place to live?
No. The Score describes documented conditions, which are shaped by structural factors — decades of disinvestment, environmental burden, and access gaps that no individual resident is responsible for. It is descriptive of conditions, not a verdict on a place or the people who live there.
Do wealthier ZIP codes just score higher?
Largely, yes — and we publish the size of it rather than leaving you to find it. Across the 21,774 ZIP codes that carry both, median household income accounts for about 61% of the variation in the ZipVitals Score, and about 28% of the variation in life expectancy — a health outcome we deliberately hold out of the Score. Our index tracks income more closely than it tracks how long people actually live, which is a real limit on it. Income is also one of the Score's own inputs, carrying about 0.4% of its weight directly, and several domains read economic conditions besides. This is an association between two things we observe about the same places, never a claim that income causes health.

What a ZIP code even is here, how completely yours is measured, and why a number is sometimes absent.
Why do you use ZCTA instead of the USPS ZIP code?
A USPS ZIP code is a mail-delivery route, not an area, so it has no fixed boundary to attach data to. The Census Bureau's ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) is the area unit that most closely corresponds to a ZIP, and it is what federal health and Census datasets publish to. ZipVitals uses the ZCTA as its canonical key so every number is a fact about a real, bounded place.
How is distance in miles measured?
Every distance on ZipVitals is a straight-line distance ("as the crow flies"), not a driving distance, and it's measured to the edge of a ZIP's boundary rather than its center. That's why a hospital just outside a large rural ZIP reads as almost zero miles, and why two ZIP codes that touch are described as sharing a border. The same rule applies whether we're measuring to a place — like the nearest emergency room — or between two ZIP codes, such as the nearest healthier ZIP or a pair of neighboring ZIPs on the lists that show where health changes most.
Is life expectancy part of the Score?
No. Life expectancy is held out of the composite Score at weight zero and used only as an independent check on whether the Score tracks real-world outcomes. It is shown on a ZIP's page as its own figure where available.
What does the confidence band mean?
The confidence band reflects how completely a ZIP is measured — how many of the nine domains are present and how well-populated they are. Most ZIP codes, roughly three-quarters, carry full coverage. A ZIP with four or fewer domains is labeled "limited data" rather than given a potentially misleading Score.
Do you ever estimate a ZIP's value from county or state data?
No. Every number is a fact about the ZIP code itself, rolled up from ZIP-native inputs against published Census boundaries. When a source cannot legitimately reach the ZIP level, the value is left blank, suppressed, or labeled "unavailable" — never inherited from a coarser area and rebranded as the ZIP's.
Rankings & comparisons
Who gets ranked, who does not, and the rules the comparisons follow.
Why isn't every ZIP code ranked?
A ZIP with four or fewer of the nine domains present shows "limited data" and is not ranked, because too little is measured to compare it fairly. National lists draw only from full-coverage ZIPs so the comparison stays consistent; thinner-coverage ZIPs still appear on their own pages and in their state lists.
Can I compare ZIP codes or see rankings?
Yes. You can compare ZIP codes side by side, and browse rankings on the Insights and Rankings hub. Lists are titled by their measured attribute and use descriptive language, never a value judgment.
How are the "Surprising findings" computed?
Each finding is a stated, checkable comparison over published data — for example, estimated life expectancy against what a single straight-line fit on household income would predict. Every finding page carries a numbered "How this was computed" ledger with the exact fitted equation where a model exists, the naming floor with exact thresholds, and the measurement window of every source, and the full gated dataset is downloadable as a CSV. Every table applies a population floor, and where a finding tests a gap against uncertainty — the life-expectancy findings — a ZIP code is named only when its gap is larger than the uncertainty of its own estimate.
Why is my ZIP code not named in a finding?
Most compared ZIP codes are not named, by design. A finding names a ZIP code only when its estimate is reliable enough to stand behind: enough residents, reliability gates stated in its own ledger, and — for the life-expectancy findings — a gap larger than the uncertainty of the estimate itself. Every finding page states how many ZIP codes were held back and why, and its lookup answers any ZIP code in the comparison with its own values — including, if it was held back, the exact reason.
How is "where health changes most" measured?
For every pair of ZIP codes that sit next to each other inside a metro area or a state, we take the gap between their two ZipVitals Scores and average those gaps across the whole area. Only close pairs where both ZIP codes carry complete data are counted, and a place with too few such pairs is listed as unmeasured rather than ranked. A high average means health conditions change sharply over short distances — not that health is low overall.
What does a big gap between neighboring ZIP codes mean?
It records how sharply documented conditions change at a boundary — what was built, served, and invested in on each side of a line over decades. It describes measured conditions, never the people who live on either side, and it is not a judgment about where anyone should live.

Where does the data come from?
Twenty-six public datasets from federal and academic sources — including CDC PLACES, the Census American Community Survey, EPA environmental data, CMS hospital records, and CDC USALEEP life expectancy. Twenty of them feed the ZipVitals Score; the rest, like life expectancy, are published alongside it. Every source, its release year, and its license are listed on the methodology page.
How often is the data updated?
Each source is refreshed as its publisher releases a new vintage, and every figure on a ZIP’s page carries an "as of" year so you can see how current it is. Data vintages differ by source and are listed per source on the methodology page.
Can I reuse ZipVitals data?
Yes. All ZipVitals-derived data — the Score, sub-scores, and ranks — is licensed CC BY 4.0, so you are free to use it with attribution. Each upstream source keeps its own license, listed on the methodology page. Bulk snapshots are published for download.

Can I use this for medical decisions?
No. ZipVitals reports population-level health conditions for an area — it is not medical advice and says nothing about any individual's health. For medical decisions, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Is there an API?
Yes. ZipVitals publishes a read-only JSON API for per-ZIP data, documented with an OpenAPI specification. It is rate-limited and, like the bulk data, licensed CC BY 4.0.
